10th July 2011
In early May many Janet Marshall students took part in the Cheltenham festival of performing Arts. This long established festival, now in it's 85th year, is still going strong despite funding issues with Cheltenham Borough Council now changing a high rent for using the Town Hall. The Town Hall provides an excellent central venue where all disciplines can come together to compete under one roof and the dancers get the opportunity to perform on the main stage.
The dance sections of the festival took place over six days in the main hall. We had students in virtually every solo, duet, trio and groups sections covering all disciplines competing mostly against students from other local dance schools. As usual, the standard was very high, right from the babies (4 years and under!) up to the experienced seniors.
Janet Marshall as a school did exceptionally well, it was one of our most successful festivals ever. The school won literally hundreds of medals across all age groups and ALL students, irrespective of whether they were placed, dance beautifully. A special mention is made to the trophy winners:

The highlight of the festival as always were the group sections when all the dancers came together to work as a team to represent their school. There were three age groups: Under 10s,10 - 14 yrs and over 14 years, covering the disciplines of ballet, classical and cabaret. First to dance were the 10-14 yr age group. What a great start they won all three disciplines to take the overall 10 -14 yr cup! The winning groups were "Dream", "Going to Build a Mountain" and the beautiful new ballet group. Then came the seniors, this time we were narrowly beaten in the classical section, but won the ballet section with "Green Ballet' so the decider was the cabaret groups on the Sunday evening. I think this was one of the most entertaining groups sections I have ever seen. All the groups were fantastic, even the adjudicator couldn't decide and in the end the cup was shared with Corraine Collins Dance Studios. The last groups to take to the stage were the under 10s. In the Under 10s age groups we were placed second in each discipline. The girls all danced extremely well with great enthusiasm and were a credit to the school.
Thanks must go to Mrs McDowall for her tireless work in organising the festival, to wardrobe Mrs McDowall and Mrs Hatherall for the beautiful costumes (especially all the new group costumes an incredible amount of work!) and to Mrs Marshall and all the teachers for their help, support and amazing choreography.
